New Episode of Korby’s Book Club

I know where you are right now! In bed, or maybe, on the couch. A recent CDC report says there's only an 8% chance you're not in one of those two places.

Hey here's the latest installment of Korby's Book Club, the making of which occupied the last two days of these our trying times. It's about a novel called The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell.

Rather than join the chorus of Wash Your Hands instagram campaigns or put my venmo up on facebook, I thought I would do my best to go about the making of new stuff as I did before 6 days ago, and in spite of the pan(dem)ic. You guys are getting enough in the way of topical posts as it is.

Furthermore, my guess is that things are at least as scary for you, so I'm thanking you for your contributions, and letting you know that I don't blame you if you need to make a change.

While I really appreciate the bit of financial stability patreon support offers, it doesn't change my feeling that I'm essentially a service, the demands for which ebb and flow according to the surplus of time and money of my audience. I've been extremely fortunate that my service has some demand, but I treat it as something I have to earn every month, with every post, new song, video...

That artistic vocation is intrinsically fragile, and whatever security I may enjoy at a given time, is the exception and not the rule. Things always change.

I may have to get I straight job if things keep going all sketchy. I've done it before!

In the meantime, I'm just gonna keep the lamp oil burning, and trying to come up with new stuff and ideas. I have some things planned for the coming weeks to hopefully surprise and inspire.

I truly love being an artist, the challenge of it, and the freedom. The uncertainty is part of the gig.

Peripherally, I might note the disruption of the capitalistic juggernaut is a wonderful gift to the human spirit. Suddenly we don't have to worry that our chosen leisure will create an opportunity for our competitor. We're all home right now. We have real free time. Your curious heart has an opportunity to satisfy a few more curiosities. Dream big! Or small! Most of the best pastimes of life cost almost no money. Get a little better at guitar. Read a novel or a comic book, or do something that might end up being a complete waste of time. Taking a chance is always a good idea.

As someone who has basically never made a nickel in his life, I've made a habit of chasing after things that were interesting to me rather than profitable. I assure you it's a great way to live!

Okay I hope that's not preachy.

PS. Morse Code continues to be my main focus. I'm now part of a team of people developing the show. My new cowriter Travis and I just finished the first rewrite of the new 22 minute pilot and had a meeting yesterday with one of the producers where she gave us a bunch of notes about what she thought was wrong with it. It hurt my feelings, but it didn't change the fact that she was mostly right.

So Monday Travis and I are getting back together to hammer out a new version.

Who knows how long this part will take? When we all sign off on the new pilot, we'll start on the sizzle reel and start pitching it to the big boys. One thing is, I don't think streaming services are going anywhere.

Stay passionate! And wash your hands. korby
